Comfort and fit

15 of 51 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“There isn't much depth to the ear pads, and the driver assembly sticks out slightly past the mesh. If your ears protrude a bit from your head or you wear prominent earrings or piercings, your ears can touch the mesh, which can cause…”

RTINGS Audio · Jul 2025 · 1:55 →

“Additionally that ANC assembly in front of the speaker driver is quite large and protrudes a couple millimeters from the plane of the mesh. Because of this, if you have smaller ears... it could touch your pinna and rub the mesh on your ear…”

SoundGuys · May 2025 · 2:22 →

“My only downsides are literally that your ears can get a little sweaty without any ventilation after a couple hours and the touchpad controls on the side are still finicky like they are every year.”

Marques Brownlee · May 2025 · 7:18 →

“The third is whenever I'm wearing these around my neck, the ear cups screech together and they hug my neck tightly that it's kind of touches my chin, which makes me uncomfortable.”

Kenn OA · Apr 2026 · 1:30 →

“By making the ear cups more shallow and placing the drivers closer to your ears, it actually makes wearing these headphones way less comfortable than their competition.”

6 Months Later · Nov 2025 · 4:53 →

“if the weather is warm you are going to sweat this is an over-the-ear experience and this is something to keep in mind that that obviously precipitation will start”

Design and build quality

13 of 58 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“If you did your research like I did, these get fingerprints really bad, but they're easy to wipe down. I would actually recommend to get the silver color which is more like a creamy white color because the black shows a lot of fingerprints.”

Treborray · Jun 2025 · 3:33 →

“Frankly, I think there's just a lot of plastic materials here obviously, you know, if you're used to a typical nearly $500 headphone, you're probably used to feeling more like metal and like leather materials and stuff like that.”

Super* Review · Jun 2025 · 3:59 →

“although this finish here leads to a lot of fingerprints as you can see even just throughout the course of this review of me handling them. But yeah, overall these don't really feel like $450 headphones.”

RecordingNOW · May 2026 · 7:07 →

“In terms of the build quality, they they could be better if I'm being honest. They don't they don't feel super expensive for the price tag.”

Austin Davis · Jul 2026 · 3:02 →

“Unfortunately this is still very common for the headphone space, these don't have any waterproof rating at all.”

Mike O'Brien · May 2025 · 8:11 →

“not as much as I like that the XM6 marker return to folding for Sony's over-the-ear noise canceling headphones”

Price and value

7 of 23 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“Now there are some cons with the M6, and that is that they are now $50 more than the M5s were. There is no USB-C audio support, they still have no aptX codec support”

Steve DOES · Aug 2025 · 7:18 →

“the new WH-1000XM6 is retail for $449 in the US so that is going to be $50 more than the XM5s launch price back in 2022”

Brian Tong · May 2025 · 11:57 →

“This is $50 more than the XM5s cost when they first launched, which is $50 more than the XM4s cost before that.”

Tom’s Guide · May 2025 · 4:11 →

“It's $50 more than the XM5s from last year. Those are actually now on sale I think for like 350...”

Tech Fowler · May 2025 · 8:27 →

“the M6s costs this much compared to the M5s which sold for $400 three years ago.”

The Verge · May 2025 · 4:40 →

“the charging cable for the Sony... is the shortest and most parsimonious of its type I have ever seen.”

Sound quality

6 of 56 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“With the Sony 1000XM6s, the base on these headphones is very subdued. You do get a little bit of kick out of them especially at the higher end of the base, but these headphones don't kick as much or resonate as much as let's say the Sony…”

GYMCADDY · Jun 2025 · 9:09 →

“The stock sound of the XM6 is fairly consistent with its predecessors. There is very clearly a base dominant signature, it is boomy, the base bleeds into the mids”

crinacle · Jun 2025 · 3:59 →

“while Sony is making a big deal of the collections wider and more defined sound stage I actually still think the PX8 S2s has one of the most expansive and precise sound stages I've ever heard on any wireless noise canceling headphone.”

Sound Advice: hi-fi, TV and home cinema reviews · May 2026 · 8:17 →

“the PX7 S3 sounds more high-fi period. The XM6 is simply not as resolving in terms of detailed retrieval and vocals sound blunt compared to the crispness, focus, clarity and clean track separation of the PX7 S3”

Aaron X Loud and Wireless · May 2025 · 19:46 →

“if you have a poorly recorded track like poorly recorded low bit rate soundtrack these these will bring it out... you got to reduce the bass a little bit to really enjoy the listening”

coolaid710 · Jun 2025 · 9:21 →

“Straight out of the box, I wasn't the biggest fan of the Sony profile that they have on there... I always hop into the 10-band EQ and just dial it in from there”

The on-ear controls

5 of 21 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“Touch controls... are just gimmicky... they're not that intuitive sometimes you miss when you're walking when you're in a plane you can't actually have a symmetrical touch towards your headphones”

Mr Mx Tech -English · May 2025 · 12:35 →

“One quick thing about the Sonys in terms of ergo is if I'm adjusting the headphones for whatever reason... my palm touches way too easily the top part of the touch surface. I think it's like a quarter of an inch a little bit too large…”

GearUP with Aaron · Nov 2025 · 17:07 →

“Only thing is with touch, if you're wearing gloves, they won't work. And if it's, yeah, really cold out, and uh, yeah, you're going to be using those gloves. And if you have wet hands also, it's not going to work.”

Microphone quality on calls

5 of 26 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“if you're going to be using these on a call... the audio quality is not all that great. It just still sounds like it's lacking. It feels like one of those like $20 like stick microphones that you would buy on Amazon.”

Victor Dia · Nov 2025 · 5:13 →

“the noise cancelling you'll experience will not be consistent.”

iAmPaulObelley · Jul 2025 · 7:36 →

“Now when it comes to the mic phonability with these headphones I will say that it's very common for a lot of bluetooth headphones to not have great mics and unfortunately these headphones kind of carry on that same tradition”

Yash Bhika · Mar 2026 · 2:59 →

“It is overall a good sound, it eliminates the environmental noise, but it has a weed problem because it eats a little bit of the S sound”

The companion app

4 of 20 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“Quick warning, if you do that, then it's going to get unpaired from your phone and any other device and all settings are going to go back to factory settings.”

Sony Connect (Sony Electronics Support US) · Apr 2026 · 2:18 →

“There is a tradeoff though, we no longer have the clear base option, which was an easy way to adjust the base on the XM5.”

CEONTHEMAKING · May 2025 · 3:44 →

and 2 more with something to say here

The carrying case

3 of 29 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“the XM5s had a really big chunky box. Not only was it big, it had a weird shape. Not only that, it also had this really weird zipper that went all around and that was very inconvenient.”

Victor Dia · Nov 2025 · 0:49 →

“It's this weird shape where you have to have a little bit of a learning curve”

Mr Mx Tech -English · May 2025 · 3:04 →

“with the Sonys they are foldable, which is much more portable and a lot of people prefer that... But at the end of the day, I have to do all that and then put it in here”

Seif Buys · Jun 2025 · 16:40 →

Noise cancellation

2 of 57 reviewers who discussed it had a problem with it

“If I wear these for a really long stretch, I start feeling nausea. It starts off first, then it builds. This isn't a defect. This is a known side effect of strong noise cancellation.”

Kenn OA · Apr 2026 · 3:17 →

“these headphones right here are not topping the charts when it comes to low drumming noises, like from an airplane jet or like an AC unit.”

Steve DOES · Aug 2025 · 4:40 →

“When compared to the Sony or for that matter Bose headphones or AirPods Max, those are kind of the three industry leaders right now, unfortunately it's just not quite at that level. I would say it's really not even close”

Mike O'Brien · Jul 2025 · 6:36 →
